Pointsettia Pillows

A small group of us met at Cheryl's to make pointsettia pillows on Monday.  A fun time was had by all and we actually finished our projects!

Thanks to Judy for her great instruction and expert gluing skills, and thanks to Robin for the patterns and keeping us all in touch.  Special thanks to Cheryl for, once again, letting us use her house for our gathering.

Twist and Turn November 18 Meeting + Birds

Thank you to Linda for showing us the Twist and Turn technique to make our uneven sized blocks more uniform.  I've already made 3 of the 10 blocks I received in a block exchange 12 (!) years ago more workable.  I honestly had no idea how to put them together until now!  My personal thanks to you Linda for sharing that technique.  :o)

Below is the PDF pattern link and some photos of where I got the idea for the fabric birds that I held up at Show and Tell.  Really simple to make.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, I'd be glad to help.

Monthly Meeting - November 18, 2010

Hi everyone,

Our meeting this month will be on Nov. 18 at the usual time and in the usual place. Come as early as 10:00 if you like, though the “formal” portion of the meeting will be at 1:00, as always. Before I give you the details of Linda’s lesson, there was a message from Kathy Farris that you will probably need to see:

Ladies please pass along to all members of your circles (by e-mail and phone) that there is extra information for the up coming week, on the web site, that did not get into the newsletter. They are time sensitive for some events so check out the home page and View the retreat site for pictures of a great time. Registration for Esterita Austin are now posted on the web under Classes along with the supply lists.
Thanks Web Mistress Kathy Farris.

Now, on to Linda’s class! She’ll be teaching you how to do the Twist ’n Turn technique (you may have seen Sharyn Craig’s book about it), which is an excellent way to make a variety of differently-sized blocks all the same — very useful for swap blocks, among others. :) Here’s what Linda says:

This month I will be teaching the Twist 'n Turn method for setting blocks that are a little different in size. Also good for those panels we like to buy.

If you want to sew along...bring your house and tree blocks from the exchange last month. You will also need 1, 2, or 4 fabrics that will coordinate with your blocks. Scrappy is also good. You will be cutting strips to frame the blocks. If you want to cut your strips ahead of time, cut your strips either 2 1/2" or 3 1/2" by WOF. (Not both)
Of course if you are sewing you will need your machine and usual sewing supplies. You will also need a 12 1/2 " square ruler and cutting mat, etc.

See you then! :)

Woo Hoo! Shop Hop Is Just Around The Corner!

12 for 12 in 2011 Chaired By Our Own Brenda Cook!

12 for 12, 2011
Twelve for Twelve is a project for the whole guild.  It coaxes us to finish unfinished projects and complete new ones.  We must finish 11 items in a twelve month period to be eligible for a $25.00 gift certificate from the guild to be used at any of our local quilt stores. Many of the quilters send in their projects to be viewed in our 12 for 12 Gallery.  Check it out!

DQN 12-4-12 Rules for 2010-2011
1.       The time frame for this 12-4-12 is November 2010 through October 2011.

2.       You must sign up for 12-4-12 no later than November 30, 2010 and be a DQN member.

3.       November 2010 is the first month to complete a UFO.  The last month is October 2011.

4.       UFOs can be quilts, wall hangings, table runners, clothing, dolls, small or large.  Almost anything made with cloth is acceptable.  All items must have your signature/label to be considered complete.

5.       You must complete a UFO each month and notify Brenda in writing each month that you have finished the UFO.  Either email or regular mail submission is acceptable.  Phone calls will not be accepted as UFO credit.

6.       You are allowed to miss one month.  Therefore, you only have to finish 11 projects in a 12 month period of time.

7.       Either photos or a description are acceptable.  If photos are provided, you agree to let these photos be used on the DQN website and/or Chatter, unless you notify Brenda otherwise.

8.       There is a five day grace period beyond the end of the month to accept 12-4-12 submittals.  In other words, please submit by the end of each month, but if you forget, you have until the 5th of the next month to get it in and still get credit.

9.       If you miss more than one month, you are out of the program.

10.   If you complete 11 UFOs in the 12 month period, you will get a gift certificate good at your favorite local quilt shop, plus the satisfaction of knowing you have made a dent in your stash!

11.   Most important rule of all:  HAVE FUN!

Green Valley Quilt Circle Meeting Information - October 21, 2010

Hi everyone,

I’m sending this out a bit early, as there’s lots going on this month.

Our meeting will be at the usual time and place; remember that you’re encouraged to come as early as 10:00, but the “formal” meeting begins at 1:00. We have a pretty full schedule this time, too!

First of all, Marilyn Patritti will be teaching us to make those really cute mug organizers for our sewing tools. Here’s the supply list she sent:

> The Mug Organizer
> Material List
> Coffee Mug Approximately 3-1/2 tall ~ Cir. 10 inches
> 12 inch square of fabric ~
> 12 inch square coordinating fabric
> 12 inch square batting
> Velcro 1-2 inches
> 4 x 22 inch strip medium weight vinyl ~ I will supply the vinyl
> 54 inches ½ double fold bias binding or ¼ coordinating fabric will be
> required to make bias binding or you may purchase prepackaged bias binding.

If you have questions, please contact Marilyn. :)

Second, and something we’ve been anticipating for months now, we’ll be having our block swaps at this meeting. :) If you signed up for the signature block swap, you need to have 25 blocks ready to go, with your name/city/state/year written in the center strip. I suspect most of you have made these, but if you haven’t yet made the blocks and can’t remember what to do, there’s a little tutorial at <http://sandywf.blogspot.com/search/label/tutorial>.

If you signed up for the swap for the trees or houses, you need to bring 22 finished blocks. Optionally, if you’d like to have everyone’s name on your label when you make this quilt, bring some light-colored fabric (preferably ironed onto freezer paper for stability) for the other swappers to sign. This won’t be necessary for the signature swap, of course. ;)

Next, remember to attend our next DQN meeting on Oct. 14 (not the normal date!) to hear Carol Doak speak. Bring four FQs for our outgoing officers.

Save the date! <G> We’re planning our annual holiday party for Dec. 2, so plan to be there! It’s always lots of fun. Cheryl, who did such a great job of planning it last year, is once again figuring out where we’ll go, but we’ll probably be gathering at around 11:30. Remember that participating in the gift exchange is not mandatory. If you do participate, though, store-bought gifts should cost no more than $15, and handmade items are always welcome.

See you soon! :)

This Weekend: September 25 & 26 Summerlin Art Festival!

My daughter and I attended the Summerlin Art Festival a few years ago, and we had such a great time.   In addition to the wonderful artwork there is "street painting", great music, and quite a few food vendors.  Wear comfortable shoes and prepare to spend a few hours because it's huge!  Couldn't think of a better way to spend the weekend, especially with the beautiful weather we're having!  For more information:  http://www.celebrationoftheartslv.com/
